“He must have blue eyes, a pretty smile, and play guitar…

Standard

The other day I came across…the list.

You remember right? That list you made when you were like 13 of your “Future Husband (capitalized because of his great importance!)”

It went a little something like this:

1) Christian (of course! Jesus first!)

2) Attractive (derr! Anywhere between the Jonas Brothers and Leo DiCaprio)

3) Caring (you know, like my dad!)

4) Funny (he HAS to make me laugh!)

5) Sweet (like the princes in the Disney movies…and like Noah in the Notebook)

6) Pretty eyes (preferably blue)

(and as a side note…)

7) Plays guitar (so he can strum me to sleep)

I had to laugh as I read my “List.” (not saying my list looked anything like this ;)) What was I thinking? How could I put my future man of God into this little box? And if he DIDN’T have these qualities…*boot*! Next!

As I began thinking about what was going through my mind at the time I remembered something my mother told me when I proudly showed her my list. “Why does he have to have blue eyes? That’s unfair!” I never really considered it to be unfair…and then I finally met my blue-eyed prince charming and thought he was the one. He hit every single item on my list…in line…perfectly (so I thought), and after that I was hooked to him. When God finally pulled me away and showed me why he was not the one for me, through long nights of tears, anger, and shame all of those items slowly dwindled down…to 1. Christian.

The ONLY thing we as women of God should be looking for in our future husband is, is he a Christian? Will he guide and lead me towards God as a Christian man of God should? My dear ladies of Christ, once you know your man is a Christian man of God, everything else will fall into place. How will you know? Good question, you’ll know by prayer, trusting God, and reading His Word. God has clearly shown us what a man of God is to look like, act like, talk like, and most importantly, live like, from His word. Don’t lose heart my dear sisters, God knows what He’s doing. Is not our God the same One who made morning and night? The same One who made the Heavens and the Earth? The same One who kept Noah, his family, and ALL the animals in the ark safe? The same One who parted the seas for Moses and the children of Israel? And is He not, my sisters, the same One who rose up from the grave on the third day? We need not worry for anything, especially who God has as our future mate. His timing is the only timing, and He will bring him to you when the time is right, all we need to do is trust and obey as the old hymn says, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

Matthew 10:29-31 “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.”

  1. Great post, always interesting to see how we can change over the years and how different things become differently important. While you have a good point in terms of the most important thing being that the person is a follower of Jesus, i would say there may be some other things to consider [but also that in the journey of finding a man these might happen naturally] and that is things like vision and goals in life – also similar values – not that the vision and goals have to be the same but if his vision is world traveler and yours is live in the rural village down the road then they may conflict – with values i think you want those to be similar as those can be things that cause a clash in the long term… but this is getting all too very serious. i think if you love God and live life well then a lot of the other stuff will take care of itself – i got married at 35 which was not really my initial plan and yet i would not have chosen it any other way – the key is making the most of life right now and making good decisions so that if and when someone does come along you are the best person you can be for them and hopefully the other way around.

    Keep on

    • Thanks!! That is a very good point, I did think about stuff like that and I’m hoping for those who read this will understand all the itty bitty things we care about in someone will come out hopefully once they find out the person believes in God. Thanks again!
